The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has refuted claims that the price of a gas cylinder is to be increased and added that none of the gas companies had sought an increase in the price of a gas cylinder.
Speculation was rife in social media that the price of a gas cylinder will be increased by nearly Rs.200. However, the CAA has affirmed that no such price hike would take place.
Minister of Transport Services Management, Power and Energy Mahinda Amaraweera said the allegations levelled against the Government by certain sections with regard to the recent price hike of 92 Octane Petrol by the Lanka IOC are baseless.
Minister Amaraweera said as per the agreement reached in 2003 with the then-government, Lanka IOC does not need the permission of the subject Minister to increase fuel prices.
Under these circumstances, the Ministry of Power and Energy had not interfered in the recent fuel price hike by the IOC, the Minister added.
