Sri Lanka plans on putting a permanent halt to the import of green gram, it is reported.
This was revealed by the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Economic Affairs, Livestock Development, Irrigation and Fisheries & Aquatic Resources Development P. Harrison during a meeting held recently with the Anuradhapura District Provincial Irrigation Engineers.
The Minister had noted that measures are underway to grow green gram on 15,000 acres in the Hambantota District under a special project.
Therefore, he said it would not be necessary to import green gram from next year.
The minister added that currently cashew is being cultivated in Jaffna, Mulaithivu and Killinochchi districts under modernised agricultural projects, while the expected harvest is around 3,000 metric tons. He also noted that at present black gram (Undu) imports have been stopped due to adequate production.
