Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has issued instructions to the relevant authorities to ensure street name boards are not in a foreign language.
The Prime Minister’s Office said that Wickremesinghe has instructed the Home Affairs, Local Government and Provincial Council’s Minister Vajira Abeywardene to ensure that all streets in Sri Lanka are named only in Sinhala, Tamil and English languages.
“No other language cannot be used,” the Prime Minister’s Office said.
There have been reports that name boards in some areas are in Sinhalese and Chinese.
A similar issue also arose last year where some China-Sri Lanka joint projects had sign boards in Chinese, English and Sinhalese and not Tamil.
