Prepared to close down Catholic schools if coronavirus became an epidemic - Cardinal

Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith said the Catholic Church was prepared to close down schools that comes under it if the coronavirus became an epidemic.

Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith and Ven. Ittapane Dhammalankara Thera held a media briefing yesterday (28) on the coronavirus that has now been confirmed in Sri Lanka.

Speaking, Cardinal Ranjith told the media briefing that it was important to look into the safety of children especially since schools are a place where the virus can spread rapidly. He urged education authorities to look into this issue.

He further urged the Government to take all necessary steps to control the situation and said they are willing to support these efforts.

Noting that there was currently a shortage of surgical masks, he added that the Government to ensure that sufficient stocks are brought into the country and further asked people not to panic over the matter.
