Unwanted SMS Ads halted

The Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has directed all mobile operators to include an output unsubscribe option to all unsolicited promotional messages, enabling consumers the right to discontinue receiving such messages.

In a message, the TRCSL says the opt out options would be offered free of charge.

It is said that this measure is to be implemented before March. Accordingly, no candidate will be able to do campaigning through SMS at the upcoming general election.

No President's SMS in 2020

On Jan. 01, 2020, President Gotabhaya had not extended his new year greetings to Sri Lankans in this manner, putting a stop to a practice that had continued for several years.

For several years now, the President of the country had sent a greeting message to all mobile subscribers in the country on Jan. 01 as well as on the Sinhala and Tamil New year in April.

In the recent years, the Prime Minister too had sent his new year wishes.
