CID to record statements from Maithri, Ranil, Karu, Cardinal

The Attorney General has instructed the Criminal Investigation Department to record statements from former President Maithripala Sirisena, former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya and His Eminence Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith pertaining to the Easter Sunday attacks, Government Deputy Senior Solicitor General Dileepa Pieris told the Colombo Additional Magistrate Priyantha Liyanage yesterday (17).

The case was taken up in Court yesterday and the Prison Superintendent produced the two officials currently in remand custody over their failure to avert the Easter Sunday attacks former IGP Pujith Jayasundara and former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando.

The case was taken up for hearing before the Fort Magistrate Court and as additional Magistrate Priyantha Liyanage ordered former defence secretary Hemasiri Fernando and IGP Pujith Jayasundara, who is on mandatory leave, have been further remanded till December 23.

Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris appearing for AG before the Court as the case over failing to avert the Easter Sunday attacks told court that so far the statements of three former IGs, four DIGs and former Law and Order Minister Ranjith Maddumabandara had been recorded.

He told court that further investigations pertaining to this incident is ongoing.
