UN lauds drugs prevention role in SL: Defence Min

The UN Resident Co-ordinator Hanaa Singer Hamdy extended her appreciation for the continual resounding efforts initiated by the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) through the Defence Ministry to cripple the illegal drug ring, which in turn reflects a positive impression on both Sri Lanka and on the entire region, the Defence Ministry said

She conveyed these views during a cordial discussion with the Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Gen. Kamal Gunaratne (Retd) at the Defence Headquarters Complex, Sri Jayawardenepura, Kotte yesterday.

Head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Alan Cole was also present at the meeting.

Gen. Gunaratne, illustrating the records of recent drug seizures, said almost one ton of illegal drugs were taken into custody by the Sri Lankan law enforcing agencies.

The Defence Secretary explained the achievements made by National Dangerous Drugs Control Board (NDDCB) under the new leadership and also stated on the process introduced for onward rehabilitation of drug addicts without delay.

The UN Resident Coordinator in an appreciative gesture praised the role of GOSL during the pandemic situation of the country.

She also commended the rehabilitation efforts put forward by the NDDCB in Sri Lanka.
