Traders warn already expensive vegetables to cost more

All Island Economic Centre Collective President Aruna Shantha Hettiarachchi yesterday said prices of vegetables countrywide will also increase sharply following the fuel hike.

“Across the board vegetable prices will increase between Rs. 8 to Rs. 10, in line with the fuel hike. From farmers to consumer at each step the prices have been jacked up,” he said, adding that people who used to buy a kilo of vegetables can now only afford one of each vegetable given the high prices.

“Generally, during the festive season we receive over 400 tons of vegetables to the Nuwara Eliya Exonomic Centre, but this year the quantity has dropped drastically to 40 tons,” Hettiarachchi added.
