AG hands over extradition papers for Mahendran to MFA, Defense

The legal papers necessary to facilitate the extradition of former Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran from Singapore to face the courts in Sri Lanka have been handed over to the Defense and Foreign Affairs Ministry yesterday the Attorney General’s department said.

The AG’s Coordinating Officer Attorney Nishara Jayaratne in a WhatsApp message said that the AG tendered “Arjuna Mahendran’s Extradition Request in the bond scam case to Defence and Foreign Ministry for necessary Authentication and transmission to the Singapore Government.”

Mahendran ad ten others have been indicted before a special three-Judge bench for their alleged involvement in the island’s biggest securities scam.

The scam involved rigged bond auctions and dumping of securities on s pension fund managed by the central bank at high prices.

Apart from Mahendran, the others indicted are Ex-Central Bank Deputy Governor P. Samarasiri, Perpetual Treasuries Limited, PTL Beneficial owner Arjun Aloysius, PTL chief executive Kasun Palisena, Jeffery Joseph Aloysius and several other PTL directors.

Mahendran and Samarasiri are also being held responsible for some 688 million rupees which a Presidential Commission of Inquiry recommended they be asked to payback.

The commission said Mahendran “acted in collusion” with Perpetual Treasuries Ltd, connected to his son-in-law.
