Dengue threat on the rise, more than 36 000 patients reported

With the onset of Southwest monsoon, the threat of a dengue pandemic is on the rise again, Director General of Health Promotion Bureau (HBU), Aruna Jayasekara said.

Jayasekara said that a total of 55 confirmed dengue deaths have been reported across the country whereas more than 36 000 Dengue patients have been reported.

“In the months of June, July and August, when the southwest monsoon is active, Dengue threat increases. In the year 2017, there was a rapid increase in Dengue cases. However, compared with that year, this year Dengue cases are less,” Jayasekara said.

The majority of Dengue patients have been reported from Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Galle and Hambantota districts.
