The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) has by yesterday (11 July) brought in 858 expatriate women workers who were in ‘Suraksha’ safe houses maintained under the labour units of foreign embassies.
Of the women who returned, 588 had been living in a safe house run by the Kuwait Embassy. Another 146 workers remain in the safe house until their grievances are resolved, the SLBFE said in a statement.
Eighteen workers who had remained in the Riyadh Embassy in Saudi Arabia have returned home. However, 33 workers are yet to arrive. All expatriate workers who were at the Jeddah Embassy have returned to the country.
According to the SLBFE, 263 expatriate workers are currently at Suraksha houses maintained by labour units of foreign embassies across the world.
A total of 95,908 workers have gone overseas for employment during the first six months of 2019 out of which 56,526 are males, the SLBFE added.
