SLPP expects polls to be held on November 16 or 23

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) expects the Presidential elections to be held on November 16 or 23.

SLPP Chairman, Professor G L Peiris told reporters today that the election will be held on a Saturday.

He said that the Elections Commission can declare Presidential elections any time from midnight tonight.

Peiris called on the Commission to declare elections soon and take steps to implement the election laws.

Professor G L Peiris said that following a recent Supreme Court ruling it is not clear that Provincial Council elections cannot be held anytime soon.

As a result, the focus is now only on the Presidential elections. He said that the Presidential elections must be held on any day between November 10 and December 8.

“We expect the election to be held on a Saturday so we believe the election will be held on November 16 or 23,” he said.
