China offers to help Sri Lanka rebuild economy

China has offered to help Sri Lanka rebuild the economy which has suffered as a result of the coronavirus.

Chargé d’affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Colombo and Acting Ambassador Hu Wei made the offer when he met President Gotabaya Rajapaksa for talks yesterday.

The President’s office said that the Chinese diplomat took note of the strong friendship between both countries.

He noted the support extended by Sri Lanka when the coronavirus spread in China.

The diplomat said that the Chinese Government and leading Chinese businesses are prepared to help Sri Lanka rebuild the economy.

Earlier this week, Hu Wei handed over the second batch of Chinese Government aid including 20,000 test kits, 10,000 KN95 masks, 100,000 surgical masks, 10,000 PPE coverall, 1,000 protective goggles and 50,000 surgical gloves for fighting the COVID-19 pandemic to Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi.

Hu briefed Minister Wanniarachchi and the media on China’s assistance to Sri Lanka since the coronavirus outbreak, and stressed that at the time of global pandemic, all parties should strengthen unity and cooperation and help each others, instead of playing politics or stigmatising as some forces do.
