Sri Lanka face relegation in Davis Cup Tennis Tourney

Sri Lanka suffered their third successive defeat as they were handed a 0-3 drubbing by Iran in the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group-3 tie played at the SLTA Courts in Green Path, Colombo yesterday.

The home side finished last in Pool ‘A’ having earlier lost to Saudi Arabia (0-2) and Vietnam (0-2) and now they face relegation to the Group-4 of next year’s competition.

Sri Lanka started their campaign for a consolation win with Apna Perera, but their hopes soon disappeared as Yazadani Ali cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 victory in one hour in the opening Singles encounter.

Sri Lanka’s Ashen Silva suffered a similar fate as Sina Moghimi sealed the contest for Iran by claiming the second Singles 6-0, 6-3 after a battle of one hour and four minutes.

The Sri Lankan pair of Dhilvan Herath and Thehan Wijemanne then made a desperate attempt to redeem some lost pride, but their hopes were dashed with Amir Hossein and Samyar Elyasi making a clean sweep by winning the Doubles fixture 6-4, 7-6.
