SL receives measles-free certification from WHO

Sri Lanka has been declared by the WHO as the fifth South East Asian country to eradicate measles, the Health Ministry spokesman said.

Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne received the certificate in this regard from the WHO during the 72nd Session of the WHO Regional Committee for South East Asia which is ongoing in New Delhi.

Sri Lanka initiated a WHO programme in 2014 to eradicate measles. The WHO and Health Ministers from other countries praised Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne for his dedication in uplifting the health sector.

Measles is a contagious respiratory infection which manifests in rash, fever and flu-like symptoms.

In rare cases, it could be fatal.
