Sri Lanka cooperates with the US to train personnel on maritime security

Sri Lanka is working together with the US to train coast guard and navy personnel on maritime law enforcement and security operation, a report revealed.

Sri Lanka has installed state of the art radiation detection systems at Colombo port with American aid several years ago becoming a vital link in the global anti-terror surveillance network being set up by the United States ,official sources said.

Colombo port has also implemented the Container Security Initiative (CSI) and the Megaports Initiative (MI).

The training of coast guard and navy personnel on maritime law enforcement is being carried out under the “Megaports initiative” of the US that is being implemented in the seaports of at least 31 countries.

The aim of the project is to protect the world’s shipping network from dangerous cargo and nuclear materials.

Sri Lanka’s border and maritime security have remained vulnerable, according to a 2019 report published by the US Bureau of Counterterrorism.

The report added that ISIS-inspired terrorists conducted a series of suicide attacks against churches and hotels across Sri Lanka on April 21, 2019.

Sri Lanka Police had cooperated extensively with the Federal Bureau of Investigation over the investigation into the attacks, the report said.
