SLPA waives off storage charges at all ports

Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has decided to waive off storage charges as a relief measure amidst the coronavirus crisis.

“To ensure continuous operation at all ports, it was decided to waive storage charges, treating 17 to 27 March as holidays in the system,” SLPA Additional Managing Director Upali Zoysa told the Daily FT.

The decision was taken at a recent meeting headed by SLPA Chairman and Contingency Plan Chairman Major General Daya Ratnayake.

Styorage charges are the rent collected by the SLPA for keeping containers and cargo inside the port.

The waiver was given as a relief measure to companies due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The economic cost of the decision is yet to be assessed, he said.
