Sri Lanka has received about 50 million Euros as foreign exchange through the construction of the newest Cable Laying and Repair Vessel ‘SOPHIE GERMAIN’ built by Colombo Dockyard Company which is located in Colombo Port.

This ship with a width of 18.80 meters and its length 100 meter long is manufactured for Orange Marine France Germany and is to be used for marine construction and repairs, including laying cables on the seabed. Minister of Ports, Shipping and Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva inspected this vessel yesterday (27).

The Colombo Dockyard said that this is the second ship built for Cable Laying and Repair work, and 255 ships have been built and delivered to European and Asian countries on various requests. Accordingly, Dockyard emphasized that European and Asian ship owners’ have gained confidence in ‘Colombo Dockyard’ and have chosen ‘Colombo Dockyard’ as the most suitable company for ship building according to their needs in the future.

The Minister highly appreciated the fact that Colombo Dockyard Company is engaged in a joint venture with the Sri Lanka Port Authority as a company that manufactures the most modern cruise ships to Europe and the Asian region.

“By doing these kinds of ventures Sri Lanka can be turned around as a mega ship building hub in Asia. Also by having ventures of this nature more job opportunities would be created and the young community of Sri Lanka will be able to become professionals with industrial knowledge in the shipbuilding industry.’
