DOs threaten to quit

Although development officers including economic development officers under district and regional governance have done their best to provide relief services to the public affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, none of their issues have been addressed, says the Development Officers' Service Union.

In a letter addressed to Mr. S. Hettiarachchi, the secretary of the Public Administration ministry, the union points out they have been overlooked when circulars have covered facilities and allowances for Grama Niladharis and Samurdhi development officers.

Also, the Development Officers including Economic Development Officers have not been provided with protective gear such as face masks and protective gloves, they add.

The union also noted that they have also been compelled to bear fuel costs from their own pockets.

In addition, circulars issued by the Presidential Secretariat, Prime minister's officer and Public Administration ministry have not tasked Development Officers and Economic Development Officers with any responsibilities, the letter further notes.

The union states that Economic Development Officers and Development Officers will refrain from all additional duties if their grievances are not addressed by May 06.
