The Joint Postal Trade Unions Front has decided not to open post offices and sub post offices until facilities are provided at the start and destination post offices to disinfect all the letters and parcels that are handed over to the Colombo Central Mail Exchange and other post offices in the country.
Accordingly, the trade union front has informed the Post Master General that the post office staff in Colombo and suburbs will not report for work on the 4th.
All post offices will be opened on Monday (04) for regular services, the Postmaster General Ranjith Ariyaratne has announced.
The trade union front in a letter informed the Post Master General that although Colombo Post Offices and Sub Post Offices have been ordered to open, no sub post office has been disinfected so far and it is the same situation in many post offices as well.
The letter states that the trade union front has unanimously decided not to open post offices until the environment is prepared for them to function safely.
The letter further points out that functioning in a safe environment, will guarantee the safety of the citizens and a productive service can be delivered.
