Prez polls on Nov. 16 : PM post for Maithri?

The Presidential Election is likely to be held on November 16, reports say.

However, the Chairman of the Elections Commission had earlier stated that the Presidential Election will be held between November 15 and December 07.

The Chairman of the Elections Commission later said that a minimum of 44 days or a maximum of 65 days is required for the Presidential Election.

It is also reported that the announcement of the Presidential Election is scheduled to be issued in the first week of October.

Maithri's role
Anidda newspaper reports that President Maithripala Sirisena is hoping to commence discussions to join with the United National Party (UNP) after the current crisis within UNP is resolved and Sajith Premadasa is confirmed as the presidential candidate of UNP in the upcoming election.

It is learned that there has been an exchange of views between the President and Hema Premadasa on this regard and Minister Mangala Samaraweera is also enthusiastic in assisting Sajith Premadasa to create an alliance between SLFP and Premadasa.

It is learned that a group from SLFP led by Mahinda Samarasinghe has already agreed to join the UNP and the President is hoping to prevent this situation through this process.

Sajith-Maithri agreement
Meanwhile, when contacted by 'Sri Lanka Mirror', a spokesman from President's Office stated that, there had been an agreement between Sajith Premadasa and Maithripala Sirisena not to oppose if Sirisena was nominated as the common candidate of the United National Front (UNF).

He also said that if Sajith is the candidate for the UNF led by UNP the SLFP led by the President will be extending their support , however SLFP will be hoping for the Prime Minister position.
