The US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Alaina B. Teplitz, met President Gotabaya Rajapaksa today.
The President’s office said that officials from the US Embassy in Colombo accompanied the Ambassador at the meeting.
Both sides discussed the status of the bilateral relationship between both countries.
Soon after the Presidential election Rajapaksa had tweeted saying he looks forward to fostering warm and mutually beneficial relations with the USA, including bilateral economic and trade ties between the two nations and increased inward investments.
Also this week United States Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo had called on President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to ensure accountability.
He said the United States congratulates the people of Sri Lanka on their democratic election and stands ready to work with Gotabaya Rajapaksa as the new President of Sri Lanka.
Pompeo had said that Sri Lanka is a valued partner, and the US wants to work with the Government and people of Sri Lanka to advance cooperation on bilateral and regional issues, including fostering a free and open Indo-Pacific region where all countries can prosper, deepening good governance, and promoting justice, reconciliation, and human rights.
