Basil off to India to finalise $ 1 b aid

Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa will fly to India today to finalise $ 1 billion worth of assistance from the neighbouring friendly giant.

Indian funding will be utilised for essential imports including fuel, food and medicine.

“Keenly look forward to welcoming Sri Lankan Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa to India. His visit will consolidate ongoing efforts to further strengthen the India-Sri Lanka economic partnership,” the Indian High Commission in Colombo Tweeted on Saturday.

On Friday India and Sri Lanka signed a joint venture and shareholders’ agreement (JVSHA) for the Trincomalee Power Company Ltd. (TPCL), which is a joint venture between NTPC Ltd. from India and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) for developing a 100 MW solar power plant at Sampur in Sri Lanka.
