If you’ve just arrived, welcome! I hope you will stay on the journey!
My name is Dr. Asha de Vos. No, I can’t perform surgeries, but I can tell you that the ocean is unwell, but we can help her - and how! Essentially I call myself a marine biologist and ocean educator for simplicity, but I wear many more hats.
My work centres around creating space and opportunity for those underrepresented in marine science and conservation, and advocating for women and the capacity of the developing world.
I am a firm believer that if we truly want to save our ocean, ‘every coastline needs a local hero’, so social equity and inclusion are at my core. I believe there are better ways to protect the planet than colonial science and conservation, and I’m very vocal about that.
I'm also known for my work with a non-migratory population of blue whales, sperm whales, illegal fisheries, unusual animals on my shoreline, marine disasters, love for whale poop ? ? , the list goes on…and absolute passion for sharing everything I know!
I am a proud as heck Sri Lankan whose work has helped show the world what my country and her people, and other countries and humans in the developing world/Global South/Majority world, are capable of (there's a lot of amazingness out here!).
Other hats? I’m a mother to @oceanswellorg, I sit on several boards locally and internationally, I’ve been in documentaries and different kinds of fun media, I advise documentaries on their science and narratives (making sure the right people’s voices come through), I speak about science and leadership, and I’m also a motivational speaker, I am a kids book author, I am about to read for an audiobook, I’m an avid athlete (triathlete with a bias for swimming and running), I scuba dive (well) and free dive (badly), I love cake, I laugh at myself a lot, I can spend hours walking and immersing in nature, planet earth is the only place I want to live, so I’m here to ensure that’s possible, I am an opportunity creator, I’m a daughter, sister, aunt, friend but above all, I’m a human!
Hello, and thank you for joining me!
Don’t hesitate to say hello below!
