The consignment of 800,000 disposable syringes donated by India was stuck at Delhi- Uttar Pradesh during transportation in a truck to the Indira Gandhi International Airport, but the highest level intervention by the Indian External Affairs Ministry cleared it for dispatch by air to Sri Lanka on August 14, 2021, official sources said.
The truck carrying the syringes to the airport to be delivered to Sri Lanka was stopped at the border because Delhi remained closed in view of India’s 75th Independence Day Celebrations. Delhi is declared a high security zone in view of Independence Day every year.
According to the Sri Lankan High Commission in New Delhi contacted the Indian External Affairs Ministry, in the meantime, asking for assistance to facilitate the transportation of the stock of syringes to the Delhi airport to be dispatched to Sri Lanka.
Afterwards, the Ministry instructed the Delhi Police Headquarters and the other relevant police authorities to facilitate the movement of the track to the airport because of India’s strategic relationship with Sri Lanka and the nature of the product.
The Police permitted the movement of the truck on the route specified by them for this purpose in accordance with traffic rules. (Daily Mirror)
