Esala Weerakoon tipped to be SAARC Gen. Secretary

Sources from the Presidential secretariat say that senior additional secretary - Esala Weerakoon is to be appointed as the new general secretary of the SAARC.

After the nomination is approved by member states, he is to assume duties from March 01, 2020, reports say.

Sri Lanka has already sent the nomination, reports say. Former foreign secretary - Nihal Rodrigo is the only one other Sri Lankan national who has held this prestigious post before.

Esala Weerakoon is the son of prominent, retired government official - Bradman Weerakoon, who had worked as the secretary for seven prime ministers.

One of the most senior career diplomats in Sri Lanka, Esala Weerakoon had held several prominent positions in the past, including the posts of Sri Lankan ambassador in Norway and the Indian High Commissioner.
