Sri Lanka telecom employees have urged the new administration headed by President Gotabya Rajapaksa to remove forthwith SLT Board of directors headed by Chairman Kumarsinghe Sirisena who was responsible for the down fall of the state owned telecom giant.
In a letter to the president, Telecommunications Engineers Union (TEU) has requested him to appoint a New Chairman and board of directors with necessary qualification, experience and proven track record to rescue the institution which was pushed in to abyss by Kumarsinghe Sirisena.
TEU has always been vigilant on the overall business operation of SLT, SLT Group and the adverse impacts on its members. TEU has always acted in the best interest of the company, its employees, customers and our membership.
“We consider it as our prime responsibility to voice our concerns at critical times and to act upon safeguarding the company and the membership, said in a letter signed Samantha Ruwanpathirana, president of the union.
The union emphasized the need of implementing Security and Exchange Commission regulations including code of ethics, corporate governance, and best practices by the SLT.
They demanded to implement recommendations made by two special committees appointed to probe irregularities and corrupt practices in 2013 and 2018.
Another demand was to immediately stop recruitment and promotions of the current management giving priority to political affiliations and other connections.
At present management decisions were based on the whims and fancies of ill motivated external elements with short term gains for individuals perpetuated by self-interests promoted by the present SLT management,” Mr. Ruwanpathirana said.
The TEU has urged to empower executives on their authority based on the assigned job descriptions and allow making decisions based on proper judgment of professionals in all levels without any undue external influences.
